Why I clean the kitchen before I can sit down
It's 10:30pm. The plate is in the sink, the counter is shining, and you run the sponge over it again. One more thing, then you'll sit.
You wipe the table, put the sponge back in its corner, push the chairs in straight. You fold the tea towel in half instead of tossing it on the rail. Each small thing leads to the next and you don't count them, you just do them. The kitchen has been clean for ten minutes and your hands are still moving. I like that picture, honestly, someone standing alone in their kitchen at half past ten.
The line going round is: I can't sit down in a mess. Except there's no mess left. Sitting down, right then, doesn't feel like resting. It feels like admitting the day is over, that nothing else is happening tonight. So you stay standing for one more sponge. And the rest of the evening waits in the other room.
The kitchen has been clean for ten minutes, and your hands are still moving.
I was wondering…
How much of you is riding on being the one who never sits down, not even at the end?
