Why I rewrite my list instead of starting

It is 10:40pm, the notebook is open on the kitchen table. You cross out a line, you write it again just below, cleaner. The list has not moved, it has only changed handwriting.

You take a fresh page. Morning tasks at the top, the ones that can wait further down. You underline two words, circle another, cross off what is already done on an older page. All that sorting takes time, and it looks serious. While you write, something settles in your chest. The page turns neat, the lines sit straight, and it feels like moving forward.

The task at the top is the one that could go badly. As long as you are rewriting the list, you have not touched it, so it cannot go wrong yet. Rewriting is staying just before the moment it gets real. You close the notebook telling yourself you got somewhere. Outside, nothing moved. What it takes is the evening, and the same page to copy again tomorrow.

Rewriting is staying just before the moment it gets real.

I was wondering…

Who would you still be if that thing at the top of the list went badly?
