Why I keep replaying what I said in the meeting

It is 3:40 in the afternoon, you are back at your desk, and something you said earlier is still going round.

You said "I think we should look at the budget again before we sign", and for two seconds nobody answered. Someone was looking at their screen, someone was drinking their coffee. You scanned the faces for a sign. Then the meeting moved to the next point as if nothing had happened. Two seconds is nothing, and it weighs a ton.

That evening, doing the dishes, the sentence comes back. You rewrite it shorter, then in a version where you say nothing at all. What you are after is an answer to those three seconds, and those three seconds never had one. It takes your afternoon, and a little of your appetite for speaking up tomorrow.

You are looking for an answer to three seconds that never had one.

I was wondering…

What do you need someone to say out loud, before you'll let yourself believe you belong in that room?
