Why I check my bank balance several times a day

You're still in the queue, card barely back in your pocket, and your thumb is already opening the app.

It happens at a red light, in the office bathroom, right before you turn off the light. Your thumb finds the icon before you decide anything. The balance comes up, you read it, you put the phone away. Ten minutes later you couldn't say the number out loud if someone asked you. That's the part that gets me: it isn't the number you're after.

It's the gesture. The small tap that closes something for three minutes. There was an evening when the amount was lower than you expected, a payment out early, money that hadn't landed yet. Looking again settled something, and your body kept the move. Since then you hold your breath while the page loads, as if the figure could have shifted on its own. It costs a little air, twenty times a day, for a number you don't even keep.

It isn't the number you're after, it's the gesture.

I was wondering…

What are you quietly making sure never happens to you again?
